Types of Burns

First Degree Burns

First-degree burns cause minimal tissue damage and they affect the epidermis or surface of the skin. First degree burns cause pain, redness and swelling on the outer layers of the skin. A sunburn is a first-degree burn.

Second Degree Burns

Second-degree burns affect the epidermis and the dermis causing pain, redness, swelling and blisters. Pain levels vary depending on the level of nerve involvement. Sweat glands and hair follicles could be affected.

Third Degree Burns

Third-degree burns cause charring of the skin and produce eschars. The epidermis, dermis and hypodermis are all affected. These burns usually cause extensive scarring and long healing times. Third degree burns are painless due to destroyed nerve endings, but the second degree burns that accompany them do cause significant pain.

Inhalation Injuries

There are three kinds of Inhalation Injuries: Damage from Heat Inhalation, Damage from Systemic Toxins & Damage from Smoke Inhalation.
